Rustem Pasha

Rustem Pasha

Known for three things.

His mosque.  Designed by famed architect Miman Sinan, built in 1560 at the western edge of the Spice Bazaar.  Down a busy alley, through the stone doorway, up a few steps, onto a terraced patio and into the quiet peace of a typical domed, pillared, tiled mosque.

His nickname.  The Louse of Fortune, found to be infested with lice prior to his marriage with Mihirab, daughter of Sultan Suleyeman the Magnificent.

His nature.  Generally regarded as loathsome, he plotted with Roxelana, the Sultan's wife, against the favorite son of the Sultan.  Mustafa was strangled on his father's orders in 1553.

12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”
