Around 500 AD Theodoric the Great, r. 493 AD to 526 AD, built the Arian Palace Church. After Byzantine Emperor Justinian took Ravenna for the Eastern Roman Empire in 526 AD, the basilica was converted to a Christian church in 560 AD and renamed the Basilica of Sant' Apollinare Nuovo for the patron saint of Ravenna.
