Roman persecution of early Christianity changed when Constantine I established the Byzantine Eastern Roman Empire with its capital Constantinople in 324. His support of Christianity encouraged the construction of churches across Jordan, with further growth during the reign of Emperor Justinian, 527-565.
Depopulation by the plague of 542, a fifteen year occupation by the Sassanians, and the rise of Islam in the early 7th c saw the end of Byzantine Christian control in Jordan.
