The mosaic panels of the upper level of left and right walls of the basilica are almost entirely original from the time of Theodoric, the Arian Christian, Ostrogoth king who ruled Ravenna from 493 till his death in 526.
In 540 Ravenna was taken by Orthodox Catholic Emperor Justinian, who rededicated the church in 560 to St Martin of Tours, and replaced lower level mosaic figures of Theodoric's court. The cruciform halo of Christ in the upper panels and elsewhere is likely a Catholic addition from that time.
The Wedding at Cana scene underwent a poor mid-century restoration by Felice Kibel; the Healing of the Paralytic at Capernaum was fully restored to its original appearance after damage by an Austrian bomb in 1916.
