Images of Christian art from the late Middle Ages, 1250-1500, which includes much of the Renaissance period, mostly frescoes with some mosaics. The 15th century marks an increase in the popularity of oil painting introduced by northern European painters. Wood panels were soon replaced by canvas supports, the latter being cheaper, easier to use, more transportable and available as sailing canvas.
