Chengdu, in central Sichuan, part of Tibet, was the three-day waiting point in 2007 for written permission, or not, from the Chinese government for solo passage to Tibet. Travel there is now confined to regimented tours organized by Chinese agencies. Two main attractions are the Panda breeding center and the Sichuan Opera.
